PROPERTY EVIDENCE

The Miramar Police Department Property and Evidence Division  responsible for the receipt, documentation, storage and tracking of police evidence, found property and the safekeeping of property. Additional responsibilities include fingerprinting services for the general public and crime scene processing to include the preservation of evidence. The unit is staffed by three crime scene technicians, one evidence custodian and one police administrative technician who work under the direction of a civilian supervisor.

Crime scene technicians are available 24 hours a day and are responsible for evidence collection and processing of crime scenes to include: suicides, unattended deaths, sexual assaults, child abuse, robberies and burglaries. Crime scene technicians are trained to collect and examine evidence collected at crime scenes and skilled in photography and videotaping. Members of the Property and Evidence Division provide assistance to members of the Criminal Investigations Unit as needed.

The evidence custodian handles and stores all evidence and property that is seized or found until it is needed for court, returned to its owner, or can be destroyed. Destruction, disposal, or return of evidence is determined by the officer who is assigned the case.

Property which is found or held for safekeeping is retained for a period of 90 days. If the property is unclaimed it is disposed of per statutory guidelines. An appointment is required if found property is to be picked up by an owner. To schedule an appointment please telephone.

FINGERPRINTING

Fingerprinting service is offered to Miramar residents only. Fingerprinting is done on Tuesdays only between 9:00 am and 6:00 pm. Please bring a photo ID with proof of residency and fingerprint cards. The cost is $4.00 per card. Please bring correct change.

Fingerprinting services are offered to Miramar residents on Tuesdays between the hours of 9AM – 6PM.
The cost is $4 per card.
